WHAT IS AYURVEDA?

Ayurveda, the science of life and longevity, is a system of understanding the body that has been practiced for more than five thousand years. It blends ancient wisdom with practical science to support how you live, eat, rest, and move through your day. The focus is not on treating disease, it is on caring for the individual person and guiding them back to their natural state of balance. In Ayurveda, true health includes a clear mind, a steady body, and a sense of inner joy.

Ayurveda teaches that everything in nature is made of five elements, ether, air, fire, water, and earth. Because we are part of nature, we are made of these elements too. In the body, these elements become three governing principles known as doshas. Your doshas shape your digestion, your energy, your emotions, and the rhythms that feel natural to you. By understanding your unique mix of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, you gain a clearer picture of your strengths and your challenges, as well as the support your body is asking for.

Vata is connected to air and ether and guides movement and communication. Pitta is connected to fire and water and guides digestion and metabolism. Kapha is connected to earth and water and guides structure and nourishment.

Everyone has all three, but in different proportions. This is what creates your individual constitution. Ayurveda uses this knowledge to help you choose the foods, routines, and practices that bring you back into harmony. These tools include nutrition, daily rhythm, meditation, yoga, herbs, massage, and seasonal cleansing practices.

The heart of Ayurveda is simple. When you understand your nature, you can live in a way that supports it. Ayurveda helps you feel grounded in your body, connected to your environment, and able to move through life with clarity and ease.

THE 3 DOSHAS

According to Ayurveda, we are all made up of the 5 elements; ether, air, fire, water and earth.  The 5 elements combine to create the three doshas; Vata (air and ether), Pitta (water and fire) and Kapha (water and earth.)  We are each born with varying quantities and qualities of the doshas, denoting our unique psychobiological make-up or constitution.  One of the three doshas is usually primary, one secondary, and the third least prominent.  Health depends on maintaining this proportion in balance.  When you know your constitution, and thus your strengths and challenges, you can design your diet, daily routines and habits to regain and maintain a state of health and balance throughout the seasons and your life.  It is through knowing yourself that you become your own healer.

Ayurveda classifies the seasons according to their predominant dosha.
