What Most Cleanses are Missing

What Most Cleanses are Missing

There are so many cleanses out there. Juice cleanses. Detox plans.
Programs promising to “flush” the body in a few days. And while many of them focus on what to remove from the body, they often miss something essential.

Ayurveda approaches cleansing in a very different way. Rather than forcing the body to purge or very restrictive diets, an Ayurvedic cleanse works with the body’s natural intelligence. It follows the rhythms of nature and gently supports the systems of elimination so the body and mind can release what they no longer need.

Over the years of guiding people through seasonal cleanses, I’ve come to see that a true cleanse is not only about the physical body. It is about clearing space; physically, mentally and emotionally, so our natural vitality can return.

Here are a few elements that make an Ayurvedic cleanse unique.

Cleansing in rhythm with nature
In Ayurveda, purification is most effective at the change of seasons, when nature itself is already shifting. Spring and Fall are natural transition points. The body is more willing to release what has accumulated from the previous season. Just as the earth softens and sheds what it no longer needs, our systems can also let go gently and naturally.

Preparing the body to release
In Ayurveda we don’t push the body into cleansing. We prepare it. Through simple foods, herbs, hydration, and supportive movement, we begin to open the channels of elimination. The liver, gallbladder, lymphatic system, and digestive tract are encouraged to start moving again. This process is less about force and more about allowing. When the body feels supported, it naturally begins to let go.

Cleansing the mind and emotional body
Ayurveda recognizes something that many modern detox programs overlook. Just as undigested food can accumulate in the digestive system, undigested experiences and emotions can accumulate in the mind, called mental ama (toxins). During a cleanse, as we begin to take ghee to mobilize the toxins in the deep tissues, emotions and thoughts that have been sitting beneath the surface, in our tissues, may begin to rise. Rather than pushing them away, we create space to process them through meditation, gentle EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) marma tapping, and slowing down enough to truly listen inward. We can’t separate the body and mind. When they are addressed together, deeper healing becomes possible.

Learning how to care for your system
Many cleanses focus only on the days of the cleanse itself. But the real value is what you learn along the way. Participants begin to understand their own digestion, energy patterns and rhythms more clearly. The daily practices introduced during the cleanse often become simple tools people continue using long after the program ends. These small shifts can quietly support lasting well-being.

Rebuilding and replenishing
In Ayurveda, cleansing is never the final step. After the body releases what it no longer needs, we focus on rebuilding vitality. I often think of it like caring for a well-worn white shirt. First we soak it. Then we wash it. And finally, we dye it in beautiful colors. The Rejuvenation is the final and most important step. Through nourishing foods, herbs, breath, and quieting the mind, we begin to rebuild strength, clarity, and resilience. Building greater vitality and health every time we cleanse.

Each time I guide a cleanse, I remind participants that this process is not about perfection. It’s about creating a loving, nourishing space for you to come home to yourself. In this space of acceptance, the body and mind return to balance. If you’ve been feeling heavy, tired, inflamed, scattered, or ready for a reset your nervous system and come back to a loving place with your body, this may be a supportive time to begin.
